At present, the development of refractory materials, according to the body is divided into two categories, one is shaped, the other is not shaped. But no matter what form, refractory materials are toward high purification, precision, densification development. With the technical progress of magnesium compound products and the improvement of the purity of magnesium compounds, the raw material foundation has been laid for the high purification, precision and densification of alkaline refractories.

Various magnesium compounds are used in the field of refractory materials, and ultimately exist in the form of magnesium oxide, and various magnesium compounds are sintered to magnesium oxide with different properties.
Magnesium oxide made from magnesium hydroxide is most suitable for refractory industry applications.
Magnesium oxide is widely used in the field of refractory materials because of its own characteristics. The melting point of magnesium oxide is 2800 ℃, and it is volatile above 2300 ℃ in vacuum. The temperature of its products is controlled below 2200 ℃ in oxidizing atmosphere, 1700 ℃ in reducing atmosphere and 16001700 ℃ in vacuum. Magnesium oxide has low mechanical strength, Mohs hardness of 6 and theoretical density of 3.58g/cm3. Magnesium oxide has good electrical insulation properties. Magnesium oxide products have strong resistance to corrosion of metal and alkaline solutions and can be used as metallurgical containers. High-purity magnesia crucibles are suitable for melting high-purity iron and its alloys, as well as nickel, uranium, thorium, zinc, tin, aluminum, copper, cobalt and their alloys. Fused alumina and aluminum salts may also be contained. Thermocouple protection tubes made of magnesium oxide can be used to measure high temperatures exceeding 2000°C.
